Careers at Blythman & Partners
What is the RCVS?
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) is the awarding body for veterinary nurse qualifications.

What is a Training Practice (TP)?
A recognised Training Practice (TP) is approved by the RCVS to provide the vocational training required by student nurses to complete their training. The RCVS establish strict criteria that have to be met to become a registered Training Practice within the NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) system. Once registered, Training Practices are inspected by the RCVS twice a year to ensure standards are maintained. Each Training Practice must also have qualified NVQ Assessors.

Training to become a qualified veterinary nurse
To enroll as a student nurse, trainees must be gainfully employed by a training centre before starting college. Student veterinary nurses must undergo a period of no less than two years. To be accepted as a trainee nurse,  candidates must have five GCSEs (grade C or above), which include – English Language, Maths, Science and two others. Alternatively, the RCVS will accept the BVNA Certificate in Pre-Veterinary Care. Appropriate passes in exams of a comparative or higher standard may be accepted at the discretion of the RCVS VN committee.

Veterinary Nursing as a career
Success in all of these sections will qualify the trainee as a ‘Listed Veterinary Nurse' who will be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

They may be working in veterinary practices, charity-run clinics, educational or research institutes or a number of other organizations. The qualification is also recognised in many countries around the world.

Like any other worthwhile career, training to become a veterinary nurse takes hard work and dedication. However, those willing to put in the effort will be rewarded with a career that offers diversity and an unrivaled enjoyment of day to day contact with animals and their owners.

Blythman & Partners are always on the look out for enthusiastic, committed and hard working candidates to join the practice. If you think this might be a career for you, send your CV and covering letter to Blythman & Partners, 16 Elsdon Road, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE3 1JD.

Once accepted, student veterinary nurses undergo practical based vocational training, giving treatment under supervision, supported by theoretical study. Study is done on a block release basis at Myerscough College in Preston.

Trainees must complete a portfolio of Veterinary case logs on a variety of subjects, which include – patient care, pharmacology, reception skills, nutrition, fluid therapy, intensive/barrier nursing, surgical nursing, medial nursing, laboratory techniques, radiology, microbiology and parasitology.
