Vaccinations Back to Top of Page

It is very important that puppies receive their first vaccination course between the age of eight to nine weeks and regular annual boosters throughout their life to help maintain a good level of protection.

There are several serious diseases that can infect dogs. These can cause suffering, result in permanent damage to health, or even prove fatal.

If you take in a stray dog don't assume it has been vaccinated. It is important to ask your vet about vaccinating and keep new dogs away from any dogs you already have until they have been vaccinated.

Visit your local Blythman & Partners branch for advice on vaccinations against the following diseases:

Distemper

Can affect dogs of all ages. Characterised by severe respiratory signs, weeping eyes and a runny nose. Seizures and other nervous signs can also occur.

Parvovirus

This is a distressing disease, which is most serious in very young puppies. Characterised by severe vomiting and profuse blood stained diarrhoea. Early treatment is paramount to increase the chance of recovery from this potentially fatal disease.

Canine Viral Hepatitis

This is a relatively uncommon but very contagious and potentially fatal disease. Symptoms include a high temperature, vomiting and abdominal pain. It is important to remember that these symptoms can also indicate several other far less serious illnesses.

Leptospirosis

Dogs infected by the Leptospira bacteria can suffer liver and kidney damage and will require prolonged treatment if they are to recover fully. It is also transmissible to humans.

Bordatella Bronchiseptica

This is commonly referred to as kennel cough. Kennel cough is highly contagious, especially where dogs are kept in close proximity to one another. It is one of the most common causes of infectious bronchitis. Once infected the dog will develop a persistent, harsh, dry cough that can last for several weeks.

Worming Back to Top of Page

Blythman & Partners strongly recommend treating your dog for worms every three months. Puppies should be wormed at two, five, eight and twelve weeks, then at three monthly intervals.

There are two main types of worms:

Roundworms

These are only seen in the faeces if the animal has a heavy infestation. Regular worming is essential as most pets carry them without the owner being aware of any problems.

Tapeworms

These can be detected in the faeces. You will not usually see the whole worm, just segments that look like a grain of rice. As tapeworms can be passed on by fleas it is important to treat your pet for fleas at the same time as worming.

Neutering Back to Top of Page

It is important for responsible dog owners to ensure their pet is neutered. Dogs can be neutered from six months of age.

Spaying

This is the only method of birth control that is 100% effective for female dogs. Not only will spaying prevent your dog from coming into heat and becoming pregnant, it also prevents or reduces the risk of her developing such serious conditions as pyometra (pus in the uterus). We recommend spaying your dog before her first heat as this radically reduces the likelihood of mammary tumours developing at a later date.

Castration

This is an effective method of sterilising your male dog. It can prevent the development of unwanted behaviour linked to the mating instinct such as aggression, fighting and the urge to wander. Castration also prevents or reduces the risk of testicular cancer and prostate problems.

Dental Care Back to Top of Page

Bad breath, excess salivation and a poor appetite can all be signs of dental problems. In severe cases poor dental hygiene can lead to gingivitis and loss of teeth and bacteria can even enter the bloodstream, damaging the kidney and other organs.

Free Dental Check-up

A member of our highly qualified and experienced staff will be happy to check the condition of your pet's teeth and offer advice on keeping them clean.

Diet Advice Back to Top of Page

As with humans, the feeding of a high quality, balanced diet to your dog can have significant health benefits. The growth and development of your pet, the condition of its skin and coat, its immunity to disease and how it is affected by the ageing process are all governed to some extent by the nutrients your cat obtains from its food.

Free Nutritional Advice

Please ask any member of our nursing staff for further advice on feeding your dog.

Lifestage Feeding

Your dog will have different nutritional requirements at each stage of its life. A puppy requires a diet with higher levels of protein, energy and vitamin and minerals in order for it to grow. Older dogs may need a diet that has lower levels of phosphorus and protein in order to keep its kidneys functioning normally.

Overweight Pets

An increasing number of dogs now suffer from obesity. Being overweight puts a dog's heart, lungs and joints under excessive pressure, which restricts normal activity and generally reduces their enjoyment of life. Our nursing staff run Free Weight Clinics to help your dog lose any excess weight, and advise on a suitable diet and exercise programme.

Please ask for more information or to make an appointment.

Microchipping Back to Top of Page

Microchipping is the most effective way of reuniting a lost pet with its owner.

When an animal is microchipped, a device the size of a grain of rice is implanted under the skin, between the shoulder blades using an injection. The procedure is quick, simple and won't cause your pet any more pain than an injection. Once inserted the chip will not cause any discomfort to your pet.

Each microchip has a unique number which is stored on a national database. A scan of the chip reveals this number, which can then be used to find out the owner's name and contact details from the national microchip database.

Remember you should change your microchip details if you move house.

Flea Control Back to Top of Page

Fleas and ticks can cause serious discomfort to your dog, sometimes leading to an allergic reaction or causing skin disease as well as infesting your home.

There are a number of products available to treat the problem. However, as these products contain strong insecticides, you should always take veterinary advice.

Puppies are particularly vulnerable and will need special treatment.

Pet Passports Back to Top of Page

Clients thinking about taking their pet on holiday should be aware that there are certain criteria that must be met before you can obtain a pet passport.

General requirements include:

- microchip identification

- vaccination against rabies

- treatment against ticks and tapeworms

- blood testing

Pet owners should allow at least six months as a pet may not enter or re-enter the UK until six months have passed from the date that the blood sample (with a satisfactory result) was taken.

The requirements may vary depending on your destination.

For further information regarding pet passports please contact Brenda Campbell at

Behavioural Consultation Back to Top of Page

Whether it's cats spraying, pets chewing on the furniture or dogs that are nervous or aggressive, veterinary surgeons, Mandy Ball and Annabel Duncan specialise in animal behaviour and are trained to help clients cope with problem pets.

A consultation with Mandy or Annabel can help figure out what is triggering these behaviours and teach owners what they can do to help alleviate the problem.

For further information please visit your local branch.

Puppy Parties and Puppy Training Classes Back to Top of Page

Blythman & Partners host regular puppy parties, which are specifically designed to help socialise puppies of all shapes and sizes

Puppies are invited to attend a puppy party at Blythman & Partners after receiving their first vaccination, but before their second vaccination.

Jenny Adams from Positively Pets, along with a member of our nursing staff, will be at your party to advise you and answer any questions you may have. Puppy parties are held at the Gosforth branch every second Wednesday evening. Please contact your local branch to book a place.

Jenny Adams also runs puppy and dog training classes independently. Her methods are simple and kind, yet effective so all owners and their pets can benefit and make good progress. Many owners only think about classes once their young dog has become difficult to handle but the best time to train a puppy is before the age of 12 weeks, during its fastest learning period.

You can meet Jenny at: www.posipets.co.uk
