A dozen dogs of all shapes turned up at Blythman and Partners, Gosforth to give blood in aid of national canine blood
bank, Pet Blood Bank UK.
The drive was the first of it's kind for regional Vets, Blythman and Partners and many breeds of dogs including Labradors, Boxers, Retrievers, Irish setters and Dalmatians, visited the Practice giving blood and helping to save the lives of other pets throughout the region and nationally.
All dog donors received a full health check prior to the transfusions, a red Pet Blood Bank UK bandana, a free goodie bag with sweets and treats, and free micro chipping. Almost all the animals present were first time donors from the local area including Gosforth, Seaton Burn, and Wide Open, one if the first to give blood was Anya, a three-year-old black Labrador, from Dinnington.
Blythman and Partners volunteered to host the free event after Vet, Claire Werchola, attended a seminar held by Pet Blood Bank UK, expressing their need for further donations and host practices "Dogs are similar to humans in their need for extra blood when faced with a major emergency or planned operation, unfortunately the shelf-life of the blood is short and usually we need instant access in response to accidents, I was impressed by Pet Blood Bank UK's mission to provide immediate access to blood products, which can often mean the difference between life and death to injured animals. I'm proud to be a part of what they are trying to achieve and I'm also very proud of our clients and their willingness to support us."
Jenny Walton, Veterinary Supervisor at Pet Blood Bank UK, "I'm delighted to witness such a strong turn-out today, we were actively searching for hosts in Tyne and Wear and it's great to have found a brilliant host in Blythman and Partners. The procedure itself is quick and painless and we use every bit of the blood product given, so one donation can save and care for up to four dogs.
"We are really grateful, but we urge more to become involved, as blood stocks are limited and in order for the charity to be able to continue its work we must keep costs to a minimum, so a larger turn-out helps us a great deal. The donor dogs benefit too, as we screen for diseases and blood types prior to their donation. We hope to work with Blythman and Partners in the future and to host three more events throughout 2009."
Potential canine donors must be healthy, weigh at least 25 kilos, be between one and eight years of age, be fully vaccinated and on no medication.
