17 Jun 2009: Blythman & Partners Warn of Canine Disease in Summer
As the summer months approach Blythman and Partners Veterinary Practice is warning of the dangers of Kennel Cough, Kennel Coughwhich threatens to infect a large proportion of dogs.

Kennel Cough is a highly contagious disease, which indiscriminately attacks any dog at any age.  The disease is typically passed from dog to dog in high traffic areas, such as dog shows, parks, training classes or more commonly, boarding kennels.

In response, Blythman and Partners is offering a discount on full vaccination courses throughout the month of June so owners can fully immunise their pets against infectious diseases when they are six months or more overdue for their booster.

Dogs with Kennel Cough usually have a dry hacking cough and may also have a temperature, go off their food or become lethargic.  Blythman and Partners advise that if a dog does become contagious then they shouldn't be taken into public areas whilst on their medication and for a month after.

Caroline Stell, Head Veterinary Nurse at Blythman and Partners said, "Kennel Cough is a highly common disease especially in the summer.  The disease can be prevented with a simple, pain free vaccination that is squirted into the dog's nostril.  However, if you do not get a vaccination then you run the risk of your dog getting the disease, which can last for four weeks, and your dog will be contagious for up to three months.

"Many kennels now insist on the vaccination and all of the Blythman and Partners branches are increasingly receiving calls from dog owners a few days before their holidays asking for the vaccination.  We recommend that the vaccine be given at least one to two weeks in advance of the holiday for full protection.  But please bear in mind that the vaccination cannot be given at the same time as the annual booster.

'If you suspect your dog has Kennel Cough then take him to your local Vet immediately so they can advise on the best course of action."

Blythman and Partners is one of the leading veterinary practices in the North East, running eight surgeries throughout the region. For further information call (0191) 284 1711 or visit www.blythmanandpartners.co.uk
