06 May 2008: Hit And Run Victim Saved By Local Vets
Dedicated staff at a Hebburn veterinary practice, Blythman and Partners, have saved the life of a canine hit and run victim.Timber, a 6-year-old Jack Russell and originally a rescue dog, suffered horrific injuries at the hands of an un-marked white van and was left for dead in the road as owner Andrew Savage watched on in horror.
Mr Savage, 52 and from Jarrow, had taken the dog on their regular visit to Martin Hall elderly residents home to see his mother, Barbara Savage, when the Jack Russell escaped, running into the road and colliding with the on coming vehicle. Andrew said, "His injuries were truly awful and I really didn't think he'd survived."
A long time client of Blythman and Partners, Mr Savage rushed the wounded animal to the local surgery at Hebburn for immediate attention. The damage was so severe that after an extensive operation and round the clock monitoring, the surgeons decided to take further action to prevent infection and amputated Timber's hind leg.
The procedure would usually cost thousands, but luckily Mr Savage is a member of Practice Plan with accident cover, an insurance scheme which the veterinary practice offers to all customers, and only paid a small excess, "The Practice Plan service meant that we had nothing financial to worry about during this ordeal."
Happily Timber has fully recovered from the operation, as Andrew explained, "The staff were absolutely wonderful and the care and attention Timber's received is unsurpassed. We were really afraid we had lost him forever - he's such a happy-go-lucky dog and we would miss him terribly as he's one of the family. Even though he's lost his leg he is still a very sprightly, friendly dog and is coping very well."
"No-one expects such a horrible thing could happen to one of their pets and there's only so much you can do to prevent accidents, so I would advise taking pet insurance with a reputable company such as Blythman and Partners, as I know we couldn't have afforded the treatment required to save Timber's life otherwise."
