This baby hedgehog was found in a garden in South Shields and brought into our surgery.

At this time of year, hedgehogs need to be at least 500g to survive hibernation. This little guy only weighs 140g and is only 4-6 weeks old. He was very cold when he was brought in but soon picked up with warming, fluids and feeding. He will now be fostered until he’s big enough to go back in the wild in the spring.

Hedgehogs are expected to be extinct in ten years. If you see a small hedgehog out during the day at this time of year please bring them in!
