Neutering is a term given to the procedure which involves the surgical removal of a dog or cats reproductive organs.
It is referred to as castration in male dogs / cats and involves removal of the testicles.
In bitches / queens it is referred to as spaying, involving the removal of the ovaries and uterus.
Whilst it is important to neuter to prevent unwanted breeding, there are also other benefits that can affect their health and behaviour.
Behaviour: Neutering combined with training is more likely to reduce aggression and encourage calmer more predictable behaviour. It can help reduce territory marking and roaming looking for a mate.
Health: In bitches it removes the risks and financial costs associated with complicated pregnancies. The risk of potentially fatal uterine infections known as pyometra and reduction in the development of mammary and uterine tumours. In males it can remove or reduce the risk of testicular tumours and prostatic disease. Cats are also at less risk of contracting and passing on diseases such as Feline Leukaemia and FIV.
