Charites We Work With
We are incredibly proud to support The Newcastle Cat & Dog Shelter, a charity that has been at the heart of animal welfare in Newcastle since 1896. For more than 125 years, the shelter has been helping animals in need find safety, compassion, and second chances—and we are honoured to play a part in that mission by providing veterinary care.
Every animal that comes into the shelter’s care has a special story. Some are lost and waiting to be reunited with their families, while others have sadly been neglected or abandoned. Whatever their past, the shelter’s dedicated team works tirelessly to ensure each animal is cared for, loved, and prepared for the brighter future they deserve.
Our role is to provide veterinary support while animals are at the shelter. This includes health checks, vaccinations, neutering, and any other medical care they may need. For some, this means starting treatment to help them recover from illness or injury, for others, it’s simply ensuring they are healthy and ready to go to their new home.
We are also delighted to continue supporting adopted pets after they leave the shelter. Every animal rehomed through the shelter receives a voucher to cover a Health Check, vaccinations and neutering at one of our eight practices across the North East, helping new owners give their pets the very best start. In addition, we are pleased to offer a complimentary flea, tick, and worm treatment if required.
It’s always a joy to welcome adopted pets and their families into our practices. Many of these animals are familiar to us from their time at the shelter, so seeing them return with wagging tails, happy faces, and loving new owners is one of the most rewarding parts of our work.
We also want to mention the tireless dedication of the staff and volunteers at The Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter. Their compassion, commitment, and determination to help animals in need is truly inspiring, and we are proud to stand alongside them in their work.
Our Veterinary Nurse Megan completed the 2025 Great North Run and raised £487.00 for the shelter – Well Done Megan!
If you would like to help support the shelter, there are lots of ways to get involved. The shelter often holds fundraising events, which we have been delighted to attend and support. These events are a wonderful way to raise money, awareness, and community spirit
Get Involved

Volunteer
Volunteers are a crucial part of the shelter team. They are lucky and incredibly grateful to have so many loyal and dedicated volunteers and are always looking for new volunteer team members.
There are so many ways you can volunteer. From helping in animal care to becoming a shop volunteer or joining as admin support.

Foster Carers
Foster carers offer a vital lifeline to some of the cats or dogs who may be struggling in the shelter environment and are in need of a little extra TLC.
It may be an animal recovering from surgery, a kitten who needs to be hand-reared, or simply a cat or a dog who does not cope well in the shelter environment and would benefit from a more settled home environment whilst their team work to find them a forever home.

Join the Shelter’s Lottery
Another way to make a difference is by taking part in the shelter’s lottery for £2 per week. Every ticket purchased helps to fund their vital work—providing food, medical care, and shelter for animals in need—while also giving you the chance to win fantastic prizes.
It’s a simple but powerful way to support the charity and be part of the life-changing work they do every day.

Make a Donation
Joining the shelter’s Troubled Tails scheme really does mean the world to the animals in their care. There are several ways to donate—either through a regular Direct Debit or as a one-off gift.
Your contributions go directly towards the daily needs of the animals—food, veterinary care, shelter maintenance, and enrichment activities—which cost on average £25 per day for a dog and £15 per day for a cat. But more than that, your support provides the stability and reassurance that every animal in the shelter’s care has the chance to thrive in a safe and loving environment.

Charity Shops
The shelter also runs charity shops at Benton and Wallsend, offering a great way to grab a bargain while helping to raise funds for their animals. Every purchase supports the daily care, medical treatment, and wellbeing of the dogs and cats at the shelter.
Whether you’re looking for clothing, household items, books or gifts, visiting the shops is a simple but effective way to make a real difference. Plus, you might just find something special for yourself!
If you are considering adding a pet to your family, we encourage you to consider adopting from the shelter. Not only will you be giving an animal a second chance, but you will also be supporting a charity that has been rehoming animals in Newcastle for over a century.
