Kitten/Cat Advice: Settling into your home

Once your new kitten/cat has been brought home, keeping them in one room for the first few days is advised to avoid overwhelming them. Once they are comfortable, they can be introduced to other areas of the home.

They should be allowed to investigate their new environment in their own time. Leave their cat carrier door open and don’t force them out but allow them to come to you and initiate affection or play. Forcing such interactions will only delay building your relationship. If they prefer to hide initially for the first few days that must be respected.

Keep their new home as calm as possible with no loud noises or unfamiliar faces until they are settled, feel safe and have begun forming a bond with you. Children should be supervised at all times and educated on safe handling to avoid unwanted interactions or injury. Having a blanket and bed from the kitten/ cat’s previous home which will have a familiar scent can help them settle faster during the night and feel less alone.

It’s important to note kittens need up to 20 hours of sleep per day for optimum health and development so you should always avoid disturbing them while they sleep.

Most importantly enjoy the time you spend creating and building that bond with your new companion. It’s an incredibly special time.
